Somatic-Oriented Therapy in Vancouver:
Healing Trauma Through the Body
What is Somatic-Oriented Therapy?
Somatic-Oriented Therapy (also closely related to Somatic Experiencing) is a "bottom-up"
therapeutic approach that focuses on the profound connection between the mind and the
physical body. The word "somatic" simply means "of the body."
When we experience chronic stress or traumatic events, our nervous system's fight, flight, or
freeze response can become "stuck." This trapped survival energy often manifests as chronic
pain, anxiety, shallow breathing, fatigue, or emotional dysregulation long after the initial event
has passed. While traditional cognitive therapies focus on changing how you think (top-down),
somatic therapy focuses on regulating how your nervous system feels (bottom-up), allowing the
body to safely release and process stored trauma.
How We Release Stored Stress
Somatic therapy incorporates a variety of gentle, body-centered techniques to help you build
resilience and safely process distress:
Who Benefits from Somatic Therapy?
This approach is particularly powerful for individuals experiencing:
● Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex Trauma (C-PTSD).
● High levels of chronic anxiety, panic attacks, or persistent stress.
● Unexplained physical symptoms, chronic pain, or physical tension linked to emotional
distress.
● A sense of being disconnected or "numb" to their body and emotions.
